Disturb Book Review

Image
Disturb by J.A. Konrath is a "what-if" thriller about a drug that could eliminate sleep, giving people back years of their lives that is currently wasted sleeping. As the main character Dr. Bill May, an FDA agent, begins research to determine approval for the drug N-SOM it quickly becomes evident that something is wrong. The man who created N-SOM, Dr. Nikos Stefanopolous, is viciously murdered but his daughter is adamant about continuing to get the drug approved. People working on the drug are disappearing and that includes a previous FDA agent. What's going on here? This was another novel that was somewhat out of my genre preference, but I was entertained. There are many twists and surprises that are just crazy. I read Origins (also by Konrath) and I saw a number of similarities in situations and some wording. It was a different premise, but it had many similar elements, such as the facility where N-SOM is manufactured and tested is underground. In Origins, the fac

Sticks, Stones, and Dragon Bones III Book Review

Sticks, Stones, and Dragon Bones III  by Evelyn Ink The final chapter of the Darlington sisters' adventure was worth the wait. The sisters Paige, Bean, Dorrit and Hayde started out with a doorknob, backpacks, a few snacks, and a sword with their mother's name engraved on it set to face unknown dangers to save their older sister from a beast. The girls truly grew up on their perilous journey, but stayed true to character until the end. In Sticks, Stones, and Dragon Bones III by Evelyn Ink, the Darlington sisters finally get within reach of their sister, but they have to go through Brakkus (the monster that kidnapped their sister in the first place) and the almost king who is set on ruling whether he has the right to or not. But these things, although scary, do not deter the sisters as they join the rebels and hope it's the right side. Nothing is set for the girls. Much of their journey has been filled with prophesy and chance, and they use that and their own quirks

Flashfire Book Review

Flashfire by Richard Stark I found this book in the library because I had just seen the movie Parker starring Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez. Something didn't feel right about the movie and when I saw that it was based on a novel, I decided to find out just what felt wrong about Parker. I enjoy Jason Statham movies, but Parker was just "off." Anyway, after reading the book, I see what the script writer was attempting to do. It didn't work. Flashfire by Richard Stark is about Parker. He is a criminal--a very creative one, but still a criminal. He works off an "honor" code. Honor among thieves, right. Parker is offered a piece of a much bigger heist after participating in a bank robbery, but he declines. So when he is given only a small portion of his take on the bank job, he's upset.  The other thieves promise to give him the rest once they finish a big job that they needed his share to accomplish. So starts the vendetta that takes us in a round
